
Hanks was reunited with Ron Howard in his next character, which was as commander and astronaut Jim Lovell in Apollo 13 (1995). Critics generally applauded the film and the performance of the entire ensemble, that included actors Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise, Ed Harris and Kathleen Quinlan. The film earned nine Academy Award nominations and won two. Hanks was the voice actor for Sheriff Woody in Disney/Pixar's computer-animated feature Toy Story (1995). His directorial debut came a year later in The Thing You Do! (1996) about the rise and decline of a pop group from the 1960s, also playing the part of a music producer. The Time magazine's Richard Schickel described his performance as "charming" and most people who reviewed the film agreed that Hanksrole has earned him a place among the top romantic comedy actors of his time.
